Next day visibility forecasts for Marla

This week we have released a new update for Marla dive visibility app introducing next day visibility forecasts. We also incorporated more weather and sea conditions signals into our estimations. Check it out!

How it works

The satellite data we use for our forecasts arrive with over 24h delay. We use machine learning algorithms to compensate for these delays.

We blend satellite imagery from previous days with weather and sea conditions reports and forecasts to estimate visibility for current day as well as make predictions for the day after.

We found experimentally and from the divers' feedback that wind direction and speed as well as geographic location of the dive spot together with historic visibility reports and other factors significantly help with forecasting.

What's next

Our algorithms are only as a good as the data we get from the satellites which - as we previously discussed - have limitations. This bounds how accurately we can model visibility dynamics in complex environments, such as coastal areas.

We are working on improving our estimations by incorporating more of divers' feedback. You can help us by "reporting viz" every time you use Marla app.

Enjoy and drop us a line on dima@marla.blue if you have any questions or feedback.
